"Angels may be very excellent sort of folk in their own way, but we, poor mortals in our present state, would probably find them precious slow company." -- Jerome K. Jerome

Friends, Family, & Fun!

Friends

I have amassed quite a few friends over the years. Even though I still have close ties to friends from my high-school days, my closest friendships are those I have made in college. The list below is but a small sampler of the many people I know, and further limited to those people with web pages. (If you have a web page and don't see your name on this list, tell me about it!

The Group

"The Group" began as four prospective freshmen -- architects all around -- sought human company during Orientation one sunny summer. We meshed beautifully and our mutual friendship is still strong -- even though one has defected to journalism. Our troupe has been responsible for many things, most notably Design Inside, an unsuccessful attempt to create a student-run newsletter/magazine for the school of architecture.

  • Elizabeth Halpenny. A kind, innocent person in much need of corruption. <grin>
  • Shawn Murphy. A puzzling kind of guy and yet another architecture student. After a brief hiatus from humanity, he has resurfaced -- at least for now.
  • Colin Smith. The defector to journalism, Colin has an amazing talent at page layout and graphic design.

Alpha Rho Chi

I have met many people though my involvement in Alpha Rho Chi, the co-ed, national social and profesional fraternity for architecture and the allied arts. Fraternity life has shown me how to make valuable friendships with people I would not have associated with otherwise. (Important note: Colin Smith also falls under the APX category but is not listed again.)

  • Kevin Conklin. The current Worthy Architect (President) of the Andronicus Chapter. An intimidating appearance hides a kind heart.
  • Joe Davis. A very quite guy who is prone to strange outbursts, both creative and verbal. Joe is one of the latest initiates of APX.
  • Jeff Haber. A total follower of the "straight-edge" philosophy and a constant companion of Kevin.
  • Renay Marquez. The president of her own design firm, Renay is one of the latest initiates of APX.
  • Keith Olsen. My big brother has graduated already! Keith works for the The Jerde Partnership.
  • Vincent Villalobos. Vince is... well... different. One look at his home page will explain everything, only to open up a thousand new questions.
  • Shannon Walits. One of our token art majors, Shannon has dabbled in digital art and private art lessons for children.

...and Others

There are many more people I count among my friends who do not fall into the categories above. These are friendships bound not by constant companionship or proximity, but by the true bond of one friend to another.

  • Michael Durfee. All I can say about Mike is that he is very strange. Originally intent on becoming a chemist, he has now discovered a love for geology.
  • David Hand. A wonderful guy with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. Too bad he dropped architecture after a semester...
